FIND
IT
Dear Friends;
When
I confided in my family and friends that I had been diagnosed with breast
cancer, some of them (of a similar age) confided in me that they had not ever had an exam or had not had one in years. Some even told me they did not know how to administer a "self-examination". Check with your doctor about what exams are right for you! |
FACE IT
When I was diagnosed, my greatest enemy
was fear. Fear of my family, friends and co-workers treating me differently;
fear of pain and suffering, fear of dying and yes... plain old fear of
the unknown. I beg of you ... do not fear communicating with others about
your concerns. Silence is a friend to breast cancer.
You can gain strength from joining a support group.
FIX IT
With research and
education, I faced my fears and I gained strength each day. My experience
with breast cancer brought me together with women who have survived
for thirty years or more. I also met men, (yes, men), and women,
like myself, who were new to the process of surgery and treatment. What
I have learned is that the medical world has advanced by leaps and bounds
in the area of breast cancer detection and treatment. The survival rate
is very high ...the key is to FIND IT early and FIX IT.
HAVE
FAITH
"The Lord
is my Shepard..."
You don't need to
think the same way I do, but it's OK to believe in a power stronger than
yourself. For me it's Jesus Christ. I have a relationship
with the Lord that has been a great source of strength and healing for
me. If you have a relationship with a Higher Power, please pray
for me and all of us who need the extra strength.
And I ask you to have
Faith ... true Faith that no one is alone in this fight.
The fight against this enemy ... this disease ... this breast cancer....
together, we can beat it!
Fund
it
Money is crucial to the fight for a cure. I invite you to visit some of
the links I have listed to help support the research that can save lives. Find ways to help...donate time, donate money ...get educated!
http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/ - The National Breast Cancer Foundation mission is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer through education and by providing mammograms for those in need.
http://www.standup2cancer.org/ - Join a community of massive propotions in a campaign called Stand Up To Cancer which is aimed at raising funds to accelerate cancer research as well as uniting the American people and building awareness for the significant advances in cancer treatment.
http://www.nci.nih.gov - NCI leads a national effort to eliminate the suffering and death due to cancer. Through basic and clinical biomedical research and training, NCI conducts and supports research that will lead to a future in which we can prevent cancer before it starts, identify cancers that do develop at the earliest stage, eliminate cancers through innovative treatment interventions, and biologically control those cancers that we cannot eliminate so they become manageable.
http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/ - Click on the "it's FREE" button and help fund free mammograms for women in need — low-income, inner-city and minority women whose awareness of breast cancer and opportunity for help is often limited. Your click is paid for by site sponsors, and mammogram funding is provided to clinics throughout the U.S. through the efforts of the National Breast Cancer Foundation .
Finally....
People who know me, know that I am a positive force in life.
Breast
cancer is a negative force. I plan to fight it. I will do anything I can
to expose this enemy who comes shrouded in a cloak of dark fear, silence
and ignorance to steal our lives away. When
my own loved ones, young, intelligent women told me that they wanted to
know more about how to defend themselves from this disease, my deep personal
fears began to melt away, and my goal became clear to me: to reach out to my family
and friends on a one-to-one basis. It will not be a fancy or decorative
plea, but I pray that it will be useful, to find it, face
it, fix it, and have faith!
Thank you for caring....
